What’s Next For Africa in Digital Activism? with @SaharElnadi #Next4Africa

: Hi  probably a brief introduction about you for those who aren’t familiar with you among us

: Speaker, writer, activist promoting peace & respect 4 diversity & love all ppl :) Don’t Hate, Educate

Let me start this conversation with an African proverb (attached)

You were present at the Egyptian Revolution, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the revolutionary event

: transformational is the word! such monumental change is also life-changing, we learnt so much & still long way
My story+videos+pictures in more details in my lectures around the world:

: People have a diverse view of Egypt, how would you describe the situation on the ground especially on online activism?

the situation here represents a new birth to me: a painful few hours to lead to a new life :)

How accurate is the world’s view of social media’s role in the Egyptian revolution? Under reported or Blown out of proportion?
I think  are starting a world trend in online activism: changing how we use social media

: Why wasn’t it “the Facebook revolution” as people think - what story shows us there was more to it?

: there are 85 million people in Egypt, 20 million protested, only a fraction of those have internet access for sure it wasn’t a “Facebook Revolution” but social media helped inform/organize/mobilize/report/monitor

: Thanks. What did the world miss that you saw in the Revolution outside of the major cities? What role did tech play there?

: the reverse cycle:taking what’s on social media back to the ground 4 those who don’t have access to keep informed

: How does one ensure the offline world is at par with the activism online?

: you can check TweetStreet & TweetNadwa as examples showing ppl in the street what’s on twitter on a screen

: For more on Tweet Nadwa via   to see ’s coverage of the grassroots Twitter movement.

: Superb work so far. Enlighten as a bit on the “Don’t Hate, Educate” initiative?

: combats stereotypes & promotes respect 4 diversity, story & details here:

: What lessons we can learn from the revolution, for African activists?

: 1st we’re sorry we kept away from motherland Africa for 30 years, time to reconnect w/ African brother & sisters. Top lesson is collaboration: no one succeeds alone! and never accepting corruption & oppression also: education+mass awareness can change your life!

: What lessons can Afro-digital activists use to get those offline & in rural areas?

: go to them & show them videos/talk to them & answer questions, explain plans, teach them 2 DREAM BIG!

: Describe what you think makes “the Egyptian online” unique across the web?

: sense of humor :) we don’t take things too seriously, helps us stay positive

: Good point . I think if there are any other questions we can take them but you’ve been a great  guest!
: thank you for inviting me, great conversation, can take more for 5 min, then anytime on FB

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s your expectation of my tweets during the Twitter chat?

Since it is a chat, we expect you’d be at a computer or a device where you’ll be able to participate with us and our other guests. People are looking to have a conversation with you and though you don’t have to answer and speak to everyone, we’d appreciate if you were timely with your responses, given Twitter being real-time and all. Also, don’t forget to add #next4Africa to the end of your tweets.

How long do you require me for?

45 minutes. So from 4pm (GMT+3:00) to 4:45 after which you’re free to leave at your leisure - we hope you’ll say goodbye before you do.

I have many followers and don’t want to overwhelm them with all my tweets, what can I do?

If you begin all your tweets with @Next4Africa (address them to the Next4Africa Twitter account) only the followers who are connected to us will see your tweets. So if you tweet 10x in 3 minutes, none of your followers except those that follow us will see your tweets. We’re happy to explain this further if you’re interested.

What’s the format of the #Next4Africa Twitter chat?

We’re going to have a few questions for you for the first 5-10 minutes then we’ll open it up. People will most likely begin to tweet questions and statements before the 10 minutes are up. You’re free to respond to them and remember to tag it with #Next4Africa.

Where’s Waldo?

We don’t know, but you can be sure we’re looking.
